New study links physical problems to mental health issues in kids

A new study has mental health professionals in Eastern Iowa hoping it raises awareness about how parents can spot potential mental health issues in children. Researchers from Columbia University found microorganisms in a child’s gut may be linked to mental health problems.

Researchers have known for years that there is a link between trauma and diseases like Irritable Bowel Syndrome, or IBS. It is believed about half of all adults with IBS suffered from traumatic events or abuse in their past. The new study shows in kids diseases like IBS may also be a sign of underlying mental health issues. Read more
